- GIS 2 - Capacity Building in Geoinformation for Sustainable Development at CIG/UCM in Beira/Moçambique

- Spacial Devolopment Initiatives (SDI) gain momentum in the SADC region within the NEPAD initiative to fight poverty by broad based economic development. In a first phase a GIS for sustainable development and regional planning has been established at a decentralised level to support development initiatives within Sofala province. During the devastating floods in 2000 and 2001 the GIS project could proof its importance under real terms, providing accurate information to many emergency help providers for thousands of people in need.To strengthen the capacity of the CIG unit and to improve the scientific standard of projects carried out by staff members the 2-year project (final phase) is based on a scientific cooperation between the University of Salzburg (Department for Geography and Geoinformatics) and the North - South Institute for Development Cooperation. The academic partner as beneficiary of this project is the Catholic University of Mozambique, Beira, Sofala Province.
