Strengthening the Election Coverage Capacity – Media and Democracy in Mozambique - SAD.1

Breve Descrição

This project’s overall objective is to contribute to the reduction of absolute poverty, improvement of the living conditions by means of strengthening of the participation of all stakeholders in a sustainable, democratic, economic and socio-cultural development.The purpose of this project is to contribute to the process of consolidation of democracy in Mozambique by empowering journalists in various parts of Mozambique through improved communication methods, election coverage assistance and interactive media forums for discussion of relevant topics in the period preceding and after the 2004 presidential and legislative elections.Expected results: a)More informed analysis and improved coverage of national elections, including a larger number of women journalists involved in elections coverage including gender aspects being considered. b)Strengthening sustainable mechanisms for interaction, exchange of experiences and institutions, such as the Mozambican Editors’ Forum (EDITMOZ), providing capacity-building, networking and similar support ot Mozambican media.c)Increased reflection of local and regional issues in the media in Mozambique, exchange of experience including identification of common issues and trends emerging, contributing to the definition to democratic norms in the Southern African region. Project activities have begun in September, however the project will be financed in basket fund-way, which means that project activities before financing by ADA is guaranteed will be supported by other donors of this project, i.e. the Irish Development Cooperation contributing 50.000 USD and the Finnish Development Cooperation with 30.000 USD. The Swedish Embassy is providing approximately 66.000 USD. This project has an explicit Gender-component that aims at strengthening the gender substance of reporting elections in Mozambique, beyond simply numbers. Further it is an aim of this project to actively encourage and create the conditions for the involvement of more women journalists in elections coverage.In its conceptualisation the project is integrated in the context of the Austrian Development Cooperation and reflects the developments in Mozambique. The project activities aim at supporting the democratic process by capacity building efforts for the media so that the forthcoming elections be covered in the most professional and well-prepared way possible.
