Survey on Violence Against Women

Breve Descrição

This project is the Mozambican component of the International Violence Women Survey, one of the response to the UN Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995. This conference and a number of international fora have identified the need for a gender-disaggreagated data describing the prevalence, nature, causes and consequences of violence against women. This survey is also a response to the Government of Mozambique’s concern in relation to violence against women described in 1996 by the President of the Republic as a violation of human rights and an obstacle to social stability. The Governement’s commitment is expressed in the Action Plan for the Promotion of Women. This project aims at undertaking, for the first time in Mozambique, a survey on Violence against Women by collecting and analizing information from a random sample of app. 2000 women (in Maputo, Nampula, Sofala, Zambezia and Manica provinces) through a comprehensive standardized questionnaire covering experiences on violence, details of the incidents and characteristics of the offenders. The survey will lead to the publication and dissemination of a report on the level of victimization of women and on the efficacy of the support services available. It will provide elements for the development or improvement of the existing legislation to prevent and address violence, with emphasis on the introduction of a criminal approach to the issue. Following the completion of the project in each participating country, an international conference will be held to present and discuss the project results. Its outcome will be practical recommendations for coordinated action toward the improvement of criminal justice policies on violence against women.
