Strengthening Democracy and Governance through Development of Media in Mozambique

Breve Descrição

The project is designed to strengthen the human, technical and organizational capacity of the communication media in Mozambique, especially independent print and community media, as well as the public service radio, to enable them to effectively contribute to the process of national development, good governance and democracy. During its first two phases (1998-2004), the project aimed at achieving the quality of communication training, increasing access to the media. The final Phase III will focus on consolidation and ensuring the sustainability of the various actions undertaken since the commencement of the project in July 1998. The main outputs are: 1. Increased impact and sustainability of community radio stations (CRs) through coaching of communities, a network of technical maintenance technicians, implementation of an elaborate partnership strategy, and the strengthening of CR training. 2. Increased impact and sustainability of independent print media, through provision of equipment to provincial communication centres, training, particularly in media management, and through improved newspaper distribution. 3. The management and technical capacity of the provincial delegations of the national broadcaster will have improved to enable them to attain increased editorial and financial autonomy. The principal beneficiaries of the project are media organizations, both independent and public (Radio Mozambique), which will be assisted to develop their human resources and organizational capacity. The general population of Mozambique will also benefit from increased access to media and greater opportunities to express their views and opinions on national development issues. The focus on community radio will provide a strong basis for development of participatory democratic practices in selected provinces of Mozambique.
