Assistance to the Formulation of the Rural Development Strategy

Breve Descrição

In 2002, the Inter-Ministerial Council for Rural Development suggested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADER) develop a Rural Development Strategy (RDS). It had been noted that the PARPA had a sectoral approach and did not address rural issues in an integrated manner. A RDS would enable the PARPA revision to better address Rural Development. Various donors, including UNDP, agreed to assist MADER in this process. This project is designed to support MADER to effectively play its role as the coordinating institution for rural development policy, and project and programme implementation activities. The Rural Development Strategy, which will be produced with financial and technical support from this project, the FAO TCP project and other donor contributions, will provide the required framework for harmonizing inter-sectoral and inter-ministerial initiatives towards poverty reduction, food security and sustainable rural development. UNDP’s contribution focuses on assuring the technical assistance necessary to carry out the formulation process. It funds the Team Leader / Institutional Development Expert and the Senior Rural Development Advisor. The general output of the project is the same as that of the other contributions, namely the formulation of a Rural Development Strategy.
