Project / Programme Title
Development of Cultural Institutions of Mozambique
Brief Project Description
Context: Development models focusing exclusively on tangibles, such as dams, factories, houses, food and water, have clearly failed to reach the expectations they have raised, despite the vital nature of these goods. Hence culture is gaining more importance in the international agenda. The indivisibility of culture and development, understood not simply in terms of economic growth, but also as a means of achieving a satisfactory intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual existence is of paramount importance. In the Five Year Plan 2005-2009 of the Government of Mozambique, culture is seen as an important contributor to the human and social development and also to the economic development at local and national levels. Cultural industries can contribute to the reduction of poverty through creation of self-employment opportunities. The cultural and natural heritage of Mozambique is also seen as major factor in the development of tourism. Objectives: -To strengthen the safeguarding and promoting of the Mozambican cultural heritage at central, provincial and community level. -To sustain cultural industries and artistic expressions, contributing to reduction of poverty -To promote the culture of visiting cultural institutions by enhancing the attractiveness and accessibility of the institutions; especially to children and adolescents -To adequately equip cultural institutions to enable them to improve their functioning The project contributes to the strenghtening of capacities of culture professionals, to the development of research and conservation of museum objects and the cultural content the museums offer, as well as to the promotion of museums and monuments through improved quality and new promotional material. It further enhances to the promotion of cultural diversity and artistic expressions in national, provincial and district levels. Intangible heritage was documented and preserved for future generations. Management of cultural assets are improved and their contribution to the poverty reduction efforts strengthened. Communities contribute more actively to the safeguarding of their cultural heritage.
