HIV/AIDS Operational plan Zambezie Province

Breve Descrição

In order curb the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Mozambique, the United Nations mobilized resources in collaboration with government counterparts from the United Nations Funds managed by the UNFIP to implement the Joint Project on Youth in Zambezia. The project was executed by UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP using existing government infrastructures in Zambezia. The key objectives of the project were as follows: (1) Introduce and support quality youth-friendly integrated health services in at least 12 facilities (UNICEF and UNFPA, each to support two additional YFHS per year) in 12 selected districts of Zambezia; (2) Increase access of adolescents (focus on age group 10 to 14 and 15 to 24 years) and youth in general, to life-saving information and skills through improved in-school life-skills and sexual education, and intensified in- and out-of-school peer education and communication programmes; (3) Raise public awareness on HIV/AIDS and develop community capacity to prevent HIV/AIDS and better cope with its impact; (4) Increase access of selected communities to microfinance services, with particular attention given to young people and HIV/AIDS-affected communities as potential clients; (5) Mobilize and increase the capacity of political and civil society leadership, in particular youth and religious leaders, at all levels so as to build commitment and mobilize resources to support the fight against HIV/AIDS; (6) Strengthen technical and managerial capacity to support, guide and coordinate HIV/AIDS prevention and care interventions, including the capacity to plan and monitor HIV/AIDS-related interventions at provincial level and to formulate operational strategies, standards and technical guidelines in specific areas.
