Project / Programme Title
Safeguarding the Chopi Timbila Tradition in Mozambique
Brief Project Description
Timbila is the name of a music instrument and of the music made on it that are characteristic for the Chopi people, one of Mozambique’s ethnic groups. This safeguarding project was a follow-up to the proclamation of the Chopi Timbila by UNESCO in 2005 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The project objectives: - enhance the quality and the authenticity of the Timbila instruments; - strengthen the transmission process to the younger generations; - ensure the access of all involved to scientific documentation on the Chopi Timbila; - create performance and exchange opportunities for Timbila practitioners; - enhance the legal protection, and social and economic interests of Timbila tradition bearers. The project was executed under the direct supervision of UNESCO Maputo and implemented in close collaboration with ARPAC (National Institute for Social and Cultural research), associations representing the interests of Timbila practitioners, and the Ministry of Education and Culture, particularly the district directorate of Zavala. Project results: - strengthened national safeguarding measures of intangible cultural heritage; - strengthened capacities of the local and national level stakeholders in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, and specifically Timbila; - contribution to the better understanding of the importance of protection of cultural diversity and to need to respond to the challenges posed by modernization and globalization; - provision of understanding on the need to preserve the natural environment, and how its degradation may force changes in the life of communities and the ways they express their culture.
