In today’s world of globalization, the mobility of people is a fact of life and essential to the functioning of economies. The development of free trade agreements has facilitated the mobility of services, products and people. Worldwide travel has become easier and the number of migrants has doubled between 1960 and 2000. People migrate for several reasons: in search of better education or economic opportunities; to join family members; or are pushed by conflicts, natural disasters, human rights abuses and persecution. Migration health is more than just a focus on diseases among mobile populations and looks at broader determinants of health such as housing, education, occupational health, nutrition and food security as well as environmental conditions. IOM defines Migration health as follows: A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being of migrants and mobile populations, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This is based on the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of health as stated in the Preamble to the Constitution of the WHO, which was adopted by the 1946 International Health Conference, signed on 22 July 1946 and entered into force on 7 April 1948. IOM believes that bridging national health systems globally through international dialogue and collaboration is a way to better manage migrant health. Addressing the well being of migrants is a long term investment, and not only a matter of respect for basic migrants’ rights but also a benefit to societies. Well-managed migration health facilitates the integration of migrants within communities by promoting inclusion and understanding, contributing to stable societies and enhancing development.
