Project Fact Sheet for UNJP/MOZ/105/UNJ
- Project / Programme Title
- Capacity development and institutionalization of the Junior Farmer Field Life Schools (JFFLS) at regional and district level in Mozambique
- Brief Project Description
- The enclosed program is supported by the UN Joint Programme for Strengthening the Response to HIV and AIDS in Mozambique 2010 – 2011, and aims to improve national capacity for HIV mitigation through (i) Pilot/ testing of a school year long JFFLS curriculum to all school students in 10 schools where JFFLS are implemented in Manica and Sofala Provinces and; (ii) Capacity development of MINED, MADER and MMAS in Manica and Sofala provinces and at district level for the inclusion of the JFFLS curriculum in primary, secondary school and open centres through the on-going institutionalization process in Manica and Sofala provinces. JFFLS empowers children aged 12 to 18 years to direct their own futures, improve their livelihoods and long-term food security through the teaching of good agricultural practices, entrepreneurship and life skills education. JFFLS participants learn to associate problems encountered in their fields with problems faced in life using the same processes to make informed decisions, thus developing problem-solving and decision-making skills. Through the provision of alternative livelihood sources, and by developing more gender-equal attitudes children and youth vulnerability towards risky behaviour are greatly reduced. The revised JFFLS program will then be pilot tested in 8 schools and 2 open centres reaching approximately 4000 students. This field experience will be of critical importance to assist the Ministry of Education building-up an inclusive model of curriculum training in agriculture, nutrition and entrepreneurship in primary and secondary schools, as agreed under the TCP/MOZ/3303 “Contribution to strengthening the Ministry of Education’s capacity in agriculture, entrepreneurship and nutrition training”.
