- Responding to Mixed Migration Challenges in Mozambique.
- Brief Project Description
- This project is one branch of a UN joint initiative aiming to build the capacity of the Government of Mozambique to respond to the challenges of mixed migration flows. The whole initiative will be implemented by three agencies (IOM, UNHCR and UNICRI). This narrative outlines the IOM/UNHCR component of the broader joint initiative. The project has three main goals: First, to establish an inter-ministerial task force to coordinate the government’s response to mixed migration; second, to undertake a review of existing legislation relating to mixed migration in Mozambique, and make recommendations for reform; third, based on the findings of the legislative review, to develop Standard Operating Procedures for border officials to manage mixed migration flows, including referral mechanisms to enhance protection of vulnerable migrants (e.g. women, VoT, unaccompanied minors, and asylum seekers). The project will coordinate with IOM Tanzania, which will provide technical expertise in border management, policy and legislative reform. For protection of refugees and asylum-seekers, UNHCR will count on technical expertise within the country as well as of experts coming, on a mission basis, from its Regional Office and Headquarters. UNICRI will bring in the additional element of transparency and anti-corruption measures in the legislative review and SOPs through its global team of experts in this area.
